Founded by Miles Duggal, We Planet Earth is staffed by a group of skilled fundraisers who are using their talents to support charities that have an impact across the globe. One of the nonprofits We Planet Earth raises awareness of and mobilizes resources for is Oxfam International.
Oxfam International is at the forefront of a global movement to end poverty. The organization is fighting poverty by, among other things, highlighting the unjust work practices of large corporations. Since 2018, for example, Oxfam has been on a campaign to get big supermarkets in the US and parts of Europe to take accountability for the human suffering in their supply chains. The organization launched a Behind the Prices scorecard that uses publicly available data to evaluate the practices and policies of the 16 largest supermarkets in these territories, scoring them on their efforts to protect workers’ rights and smallholder producers.
The first scorecard released in 2018 showed supermarkets showed little concern for transparency as well as workers’ and smallholder producers’ rights. However, one year after Oxfam released its findings, which prompted over 200,000 consumers to demand action from the retailers, the 2019 scorecard showed retailers were making improvements in those areas. Average transparency rating improved from 5 percent to 17 percent, workers’ rights ratings improved from 12 percent to 18 percent, and retailers like Albert Heijn and Jumbo from the Netherlands and Aldi South from Germany published new policies on human rights. Eight other retailers took actions to address policies that could lead to worker and smallholder producer abuse.
